The String.format() method provides versatile formatting capabilities. This tutorial tries to present these capabilities in a accessible manner. The format string A format string can contain zero, one, or more format specifiers . The general form of a format specifier is: %[argument_index$] [flags] [width] [.precision]co... where things in square brackets are optional, and conversion is a character indicating the conversion to be applied to the corresponding variable value. The only required characters in the format specifier is the percent sign % and the conversion character. A simple example: public static void simpleFormat() { System.out... The Argument index The argument index is specified by a number, terminated by the dollar sign $ . The same argument may be repeated multiple times in a format string. Unindexed...

This note relates to Python 2.x. A Python class is old-style by default, unless it has another new style class or the "top level" class object as its parent. The sure way to tell that an object is an instance of a new style class is to use the function type , type(x) returns <type 'instance'> for an old-style class, but it returns <class 'ClassType.X'> for a new-style class. Class definition: class A: # old style class def __init__(sel... Test session: >>> A <class ClassType.A at 0x7f36ae442fb0> ...

dd by default does not give you any indication of progress. You may be wondering what's going on when you are copying a big file and it's taking a long time. You may start dd in the background and send it SIGUSR1 periodically to view progress. However, I think pv is more convenient. $ pv /dev/cdrom | dd of=./cdrom.img bs=64k 1.19... I've seen code like the following in the wild. But it's fragile code at best since it depends on the text output of fdisk. In fact, it doesn't work for most systems since fdisk reports in GB not MB. Plus the regex is unnecessarily complicated. # This does not work! dd if=/dev/hdb | (pv -s `...

grep is a versatile command with many variations (grep, egrep, fgrep, then various implementations). It uses a regula expression (regex) pattern to filter input. But then there are basic and extended flavors of regex - leading to even more confusion. And, beware that there are lots of bad examples of regex in the wild... There are two critical questions to ask when you use grep: which grep implementation are you using? what is the flavor of the regex? Here are some examples for gnu grep v2.7: # Find all numbers (no decimal point), basic regex... Use the -o flag to show only the matching part instead of the whole matching line: grep -o -E '\b[0-9]{2}\b' The good thing about the gnu grep is that it...

Some peculiarities about Java PrintWriter: PrintWriter never throws any exceptions. From JavaDoc : Methods in this class never throw I/O exceptions, although some of its constructors may. The client may inquire as to whether any errors have occurred by invoking checkError(). When error occurs, you'll never know anything more than that it occured, because checkError returns boolean. When a character is out of the range of the character encoding of the PrintWriter, it prints a question mark (?). But this is not an error. Test code: import java.io.*; public class TestPrintWri... Latin1 test result: java TestPrintWriter iso-8859-1 | od -bc 000000... UTF-8 test result: java TestPrintWriter utf-8 | od -bc 0000000 141...
