This example came from the jQuery validation documentation. The required rule can be used to validate a required selection box when you set the value of the first option to empty. <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <scrip... The error message is the title since no error message is specified. A more fully defined validation check would look like this: $('#my-form').validate({ errorElement: "p", ...

The PHP function is_callable verifies that a variable can be invoked as a function. Example: <?php define('F', 'f'); function... Output: var_dump: string(1) "f" is_callable: 1 Calla...

The PHP function print_r prints human-readable information about a variable, while the function var_dump dumps information about a variable. Here's an example: <?php $a = array ('a' => 'apple', 'b' => 'banan... which prints: Array ( [a] => apple [b] => b... So while print_r is "human readable", var_dump provides more information.

It's probably more useful to make the JavaScript executor a bookmarklet. That way it gains access to the page on which it is invoked. Therefore, more helpful while debugging. Here's the code: <html> <body> <a href="javascript:(funct... Or, you can add this link to your bookmarks, name it "JS Executor". For a full featured JavaScript console, you may need Jash

The code presented here is a simple implementation of a tab set. It is used to demo how a tab set could be implemented. The code is stand alone and does not depend on any JavaScript libraries. Multiple tab sets within the same page is supported. The HTML markup is fairly simple: Tabs sets are contained within a DIV element with class name "tabsContainer". Define a UL list for the tabs. Follow the UL list with equal number of DIVs for the tab contents. The Nifty Corners Cube technique is used to draw the rounded corners (original form, not the enhanced JavaScript form). HTML, CSS and JavaScript: <!doctype html> <html> <head> <style typ...

The sort operation for a Python list sorts a list in place . It takes three optional arguments to control the comparisons: s.sort([cmp[, key[, reverse]]]) cmp specifies a custom comparison function of two arguments (list items) which should return a negative, zero or positive number depending on whether the first argument is considered smaller than, equal to, or larger than the second argument: cmp=lambda x,y: cmp(x.lower(), y.lower()) . The default value is None . key specifies a function of one argument that is used to extract a comparison key from each list element: key=str.lower . The default value is None . reverse is a boolean value. If set to True , then the list elements are sorted as if each comparison were reversed. Python 2.7 (r27:82525, Jul 4 2010, 09:01:59) [MSC...

Technically, file upload cannot be handled by Ajax, because XMLHttpRequest (XHR) does not handle file inputs. All techniques not using Flash rely on an invisible iframe as the upload form submit target. JavaScript then grabs the response content from the iframe and present it, giving the same illusion as Ajax. webtoolkit AIM The technique by webtoolkit is very simple. It involves 3 simple steps: include the AIM script, implement the start/finish JavaScript functions, and add an onsubmit handler to the normal file upload form. The hooked up form looks like: <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="webt... The AIM script is also quite simple: /** * * AJAX IFRAME METHOD (AIM) * http... The above code only supports HTML responses. In order to support JSON responses, the above...

Remember the times when you googled for solutions to your technical problems? How much time did you spend on wading through the zillions of links to find the ones that are of interest to you? Wouldn't you hope that you can find the answer right away the second time around? How many times were you forced to peruse hundreds of pages of documentation for a very specific need? Did you ever need to experiment with various alternatives because the documentation was vague? Wouldn't you prefer that a shortcut is available when the same thing is needed again? Xinotes is here to record your technical findings so that you won't have to go through the same process again when the problem reappears. Experience has taught us...

You can use the system call from the os module to execute an external program: >>> import os >>> os.system(the_command_line_st... However, the path to the executable contains a space character, the system call treats the strings after the first space as arguments, causing an error. Python doc recommends the use of the subprocess module: The subprocess module provides more powerful facilities for spawning new processes and retrieving their results; using that module is preferable to using this function. For example, using wget to get the google home page: >>> from subprocess import Popen, PIPE >>> (out...

An HTML form contains more than what meets the eye. This bookmarklet displays information about form fields in the page. When there are multiple forms on the page, successive invocations of the bookmarklet display each form in turn. Add this link to your bookmarks. Here's the code: <html> <body> <a href="javascript: i...

IE and firefox both support client side XSLT. This can be done by inserting an xml-stylesheet into the XML file, which would trigger the browser to apply the XSL to the XML document and generate a transformed page: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <?... Or, it can be done more dynamically with client side JavaScript. However, IE and FF offer different APIs for XSLT. Below is my attempt to bridge the differences. It's been tested to work for IE 7.0, FF 2.0 and Opera 9.0.2. function XSLT(url) { var xslt = false; ... The following HTML page shows how to use it: <HTML> <HEAD> <SCRIPT language="JavaS...
