The tags <c:import> The <c:import> tag imports the contents of a URL and expose that in one of three ways: Import contents from a URL and write it out to the page (url may be relative or absolute):
<c:import url="theUrl" /> Import contents from a URL and save it to a scoped variable string named by the var attribute. Use the scope attribute to define the scope of the exported variable. <c:import url="theUrl" var="importTest" scope="ses... JSTL string manipulation functions
String manipulation functions are simple and self-evident. You just need to know that they exist.
Test it
Make these additions to the expanded test application :
Create a new Java class StringManipulation :
package jstl.demo.handler;
import java....
Create a new JSP ( stringmanipulation.jsp ) under webapp :
<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/c...
Compile and package the WAR with: mvn package
Deploy the WAR to a servlet container of your choice (for example, Tomcat or JBoss).
Test the page with this URL (Tomcat/JBoss running on port 8080):
http://localhost:8080/jstl-demo/demo/StringManipulation
You may adjust the URL if your servlet container runs on a different port or the web app is bound to a different context root.

Get the length of a collection The length function returns the size of a collection. It can be applied to any object supported by the JSTL core tag <c:forEach> , namely: Arrays Implementation of java.util.Collection Implementation of java.util.Iterator Implementation of java.util.Enumeration Implementation of java.util.Map String When used on String , it returns the number of characters in the string. This utility converts unicode escape strings in a file to UTF-8 encoded. Suppose you received a properties file with contents like:

You can use this utility to convert it to UTF-8 and view or edit.
import java.io.*;

It happened on Windows XP with JBoss 5.1.0.GA. This is the stack trace:
2010-07-30 16:39:52,177 ERROR [org.jboss.kernel.pl... According to " (SOLVED) JBAS-7674 solution for JBoss 5.1?? (Windows lock on jnp-service.url) ", the problem seemed to be solved for JBoss 6. In the meanwhile for JBoss 5, disabling Windows Indexing Service seemed to solve the problem. Quote from aforementioned link: It seemed that a file was being locked for some reason, and that file was obviously necessary for JBoss to start. Some further investigation (ok, I admit, I just tried to delete all of JBoss with the faith that it would fail on the locked file), it turns out that file was some file called jnp-service.url in the data directory of the default server. After downloading...

This is an example of using java.beans.XMLEncoder and java.beans.XMLDecoder to serialize/deserialize Java objects to XML. Java code TestXMLEncoder.java:
import java.io.*; import java.beans.XMLEncoder;... SimpleBean.java: public class SimpleBean { private String na... CompositeBean.java: public class CompositeBean { private Simple... NotABean.java: public class NotABean { private String name... Test Output By default, only Java beans can be serialized using XMLEncoder . Exception occurs when you try to deserialize an object which is not a Java bean. Errors actually occur when you try to serialize, but they are ignored. As a result, an XML file is generated by the serialization but the file is useless! Console output: C:\>java TestXMLEncoder Testing simple bean ... simplebean.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <java v... compositebean.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <java v... nodefault.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <java v......
